Sustainability
Peter Basso Associates incorporates sustainability into each of our designs. Collaboration among design disciplines is the key to successful sustainable design. As the M/E/P engineers, we work closely with the architect during design of the building envelope to create synergy with the mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems, optimizing system design, minimizing long-term energy use, and delivering a pleasant indoor environment.
Standard sustainable design practices include:
- Water use within the building is minimized through the use of low-flow or no-flow plumbing fixtures, and wastewater/graywater re-use is considered.
- Lighting systems and their controls are carefully considered to minimize energy use and optimize performance.
- Daylighting is used to enhance the indoor environment and to reduce electric light energy.
- Renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics are evaluated and integrated into the design when beneficial.
- Measurement and verification provisions are integrated into the M/E/P design to document facility energy use and occupant comfort. This data also is used to track performance trends to maintain optimum system performance throughout the life of the facility.
- A formal commissioning process is used to confirm that systems are performing in accordance with the design intent and to verify maintainability of systems - before occupancy.
